"AI" has existed in its current form for barely four years and the fact that it's jammed up the cognitive development of an entire generation that fast (and that there's a specific overclass of techofascists who are deeply thrilled about this) is a big damn red flag. www.nytim…

There are a lot of details in here about Zuck releasing a half-baked product, but one thing that really stands out is just how weird these folks are. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/09/t...

Some good news for a change: Overcoming a massive and aggressive tech lobby and a squeamish, Silicon Valley-friendly governor, the labor movement has managed to pass a raft of first-of-their-kind AI laws aimed at protecting workers in California.

Maybe it's just because I'm catching up on @unhappinesspod.bsky.social but I really need to talk to someone about why these AI bosses -- many of whom felt they were feminized as "nerds" earlier in life but now rule the world -- now want to be Daddy to God. www.nytimes.com/2026…

I also hear two versions of this story, three times in an hour. Silicon Valley investors are now recreating the social safety net using a new start up called Escalate as a pass through This written version offers a third version of the story www.npr.org/2026/08/17/n...

Missed shifts were costly to this McDonald's. An app has fixed the problem npr.org
AI Weekly's analysis →
  • Escalate charges McDonald's franchisees $250 per store per month, plus roughly another $250 per store in Uber vouchers and gift cards.
  • Across seven Prince George's County restaurants, the franchise saved about $35,000 a month; over 80% of worker requests are for transportation.
  • The startup keeps costs down by employing overseas coaches and using AI to handle routine first requests, escalating to a human after three.

The sentence, "only a few dozen institutions on Earth are more than 900 years old, and the vast majority are universities" has been my spell to ward off AI-induced despair since this was published in February, and closed out a talk I gave about feminist AI refusal www.chronicl…

New piece: the new digital divide - rich kids get human teachers, poor kids get shitty AI. But we can fight this, because parents, students, and teachers all hate it. Gift link:

Recent commentary

NPR sponsors are all removing promises about AI from their ads, replaced with pablum about human connection. The AI industry is so cooked lol

The thing I fundamentally cannot grasp about AI -- and maybe it's just a symptom of being firmly Middle Aged -- is that it is simply irrelevant to my day to day life. How/why do people get addicted to it. Now that everything is AI that works poorly, I've cut down on my phone use. It's great!

There was a hot second where I considered upgrading my teaching/talk slides from san serif font floating on a plain white background with 90% white space but nope, it's now a political statement, no AI would make something so sparse OR INFORMATIVE, it's 100% Authentic Middle Aged Professor.

Writing writing: "Feminist’s opposition to naturalization reveals another weak point in the AI existential risk narrative. For feminists, nothing rooted in social life is “existential” because things could always be done otherwise."
