The use of the term “AI” has flattened the policy conversation considerably from the start, but now that the stakes are “life or death” the conversation is completely unmanageable. Everyone is talking and talking about something else.
my take on AI killing us all is that even if it’s not AI that kills us all, I bet there will be an embedded AI feature that no one asked for ✨ in whatever kills us all
The main takeaway of the Hugging Face incident is that Hugging Face reported the incident before the LLM cos reported anything. Reporting & third party audits could be regulated with political will. Monitoring the whole open web for incidents (if that’s what losing containment means) is harder.

I’ve definitely been using em dashes more since the introduction to ChatGPT, because I see it everywhere constantly, but now I’ve become a problem just putting it in any time I want a run on sentence, not just in formal writing also texts, I love this new tool to just go on and on
Someone with capacity to do so, should write a “yes, AI does lead to extinction” column and then list examples: - Totaled communities in Palestine because of Lavendar (administrated by IDF) - Programs cut due to ChatGPT thinking they were DEI (administered by DOGE) - etc.
my quibble with the latest AI doomer cycle is that yes when Sam Altman says AI is too powerful that’s a sales pitch, but when someone who just quit says it they might not know what they’re talking about but I don’t think they’re doing sales (who knows maybe they’ll be VP next year after this stunt)

if I was in 6th grade right now my science project would be having AI dictate how I care for a plant (regimented!) vs caring for a plant based on vibes but also talking to it (everything recorded of course), the vibes plant would excel and the judges would give me the blue ribbon
