ActiveCampaign Review: AI Email Automation and Alternatives
Evaluate ActiveCampaign for branching customer journeys, with a concrete onboarding test, cost questions and a comparison with Brevo.
In this guide
ActiveCampaign belongs on the shortlist when the next message depends on what a customer has actually done. A branching onboarding sequence is a better evaluation than asking the platform to generate a polished newsletter. The hard work is deciding who should enter, what should stop the sequence and how to handle incomplete activity data.
What the platform brings
The vendor documents marketing automation with conditional paths and AI-assisted campaign creation. Those capabilities can reduce the effort of assembling a journey, but the business still owns the rules. An AI-generated campaign cannot know whether an activation event is reliable or whether a customer has asked to stop receiving messages unless your system supplies that information.
Map one sequence on paper first: after a permitted signup, send a welcome message; after a delay, check whether the customer completed the setup step; offer help only to those who have not. Exit when the goal is completed or communication permission is withdrawn.
The test that matters
Create four fictional contacts: newly enrolled, already activated, unsubscribed and missing an activity event. The already-activated contact should not get a redundant setup reminder. The unsubscribed contact should not receive the marketing message. The missing-event contact needs a defined fallback rather than an assumption that they failed.
Acceptance record Contact state | expected branch | actual branch Message sent? | exit reason | duplicate enrollment? Reviewer | correction needed
Run the sequence again after changing a contact's status during the waiting period. This catches a common design error: checking eligibility once at entry and ignoring later changes. Our onboarding workflow provides copy and a state table you can adapt.
Where cost and complexity grow
Obtain a quote for your contact count, send volume and required automation features. Confirm any channel, CRM or usage add-ons separately. Also budget for the person who maintains segments and tests journey changes. A team that cannot explain its existing branches may need fewer automations before it needs more AI.
Compare against the simpler option
Brevo is a useful alternative to evaluate on the same welcome sequence and actual monthly volume. Your existing email provider may already support the necessary trigger and stop conditions. The comparison guide focuses on those operational differences instead of declaring a universal winner.
Choose based on accurate routing, maintainability and useful customer actions. Judge AI copy on clarity and factual correctness; do not infer improved deliverability or revenue from its fluency. This assessment is based on documentation, with no controlled sending or conversion test.
