Google's Gemini app crosses 1B users, two months behind ChatGPT

Sundar Pichai used X to announce a threshold that used to belong exclusively to Google's flagship consumer services. Per TechCrunch, Pichai said the Gemini app had "become one of the company's fastest-growing products, recently surpassing 1 billion monthly active users," and called it the 14th Google product to hit the ten-figure mark.

The scale line comes with a few concrete numbers. Google says 63% of Gemini users talk directly to the assistant through voice, the app generates more than 150 million images every day, and iOS alone accounts for more than 100 million active users. That last figure is the interesting one, because it lands inside Apple's default-assistant environment, where Google has to earn every install rather than ship as the pre-loaded choice.

Context matters here. TechCrunch's own comparison notes that ChatGPT hit the same 1 billion monthly threshold in June, which puts Gemini roughly two months behind on the same yardstick. Google's Q2 2026 earnings had already flagged over 950 million monthly users with daily actives tripling year over year, so this milestone was a matter of when, not if.
