FineBooks tested 14 open OCR models on 2,165 expert-transcribed pages from 18th- and 19th-century books. A 3B-parameter model reached 97.6% reading accuracy, while two sub-2B models topped 96%. Better OCR for old books could unlock cleaner public-domain data for training and research.
