AI Weekly's analysis →
  • OpenAI chief scientist Jakub Pachocki published 'An Alien Mind' on September 6, arguing modern AI has become an intelligence humans do not fully understand.
  • He wrote that no lab has solved alignment and monitoring well enough to keep scaling at maximum speed for much longer.
  • Pachocki called for voluntary slowdowns until shared safety bars are set, and for international coordination to become a top government priority.

GLM-5.3 and the spread of advanced cyber capabilities anthropic.com
AI Weekly's analysis →
  • Anthropic's Frontier Red Team calls Z.ai's GLM-5.3 a "meaningful step change" in the cyber capabilities available to attackers.
  • GLM-5.3 built end-to-end exploits on 50 of 410 ExploitBench tasks (about 12%), close to Claude Mythos Preview's 14%; older models scored near zero.
  • A deceptive prompt got GLM-5.3 to engage 64% of the time; prefilled reasoning tokens 92%; an abliterated version, made for roughly $4,400, 100%.

Ah, well… I'm sure a popular image processing library isn't gonna need all the help it can get with e.g. finding and patching potential security vulnerabilities in the coming months…

doc: ban use of generative AI (#5203) · libvips/libvips@22331a7 github.com
AI Weekly's analysis →
  • libvips replaced its AI-disclosure policy with an outright ban on any contribution made 'in whole or in part' using generative AI tools.
  • Maintainers cite unknown training-data provenance and potential copyright exposure, and extend the rule to every repo under the libvips umbrella.
  • The change aligns libvips with libjpeg-turbo's recent ban; maintainer jcupitt called it 'very strict' and the PR thread was locked as too heated.

I had this idea of "cognitive forces". I dunno if it makes sense or not, but I was unable to let it go. Yes, it's about AI and yes, I'm rolling my eyes at myself too.

This is good and pretty much where I am: kyefox.com/you-wont-rea... I'd miss things if GenAI vanished tomorrow, but I wouldn't be bothered by its absence. I think we'd be better off if it did, but it's here and none of the prohibitionists have a real plan for getting there. So…

FFS, this is so fucked… 😩 Would it kill the people here to not chase away any tech person who comes here and says something about AI?… I really want tech discussions and communities to hang out here and not on Elon's far-right playground 😐

I'm already starting to feel the urge to write a blog post about using AI agents, and I haven't even installed OpenCode yet

I swear the Google "AI Overview" got soo much worse in the last ~1-2 months… it wasn't bad at all before, but they've recently changed it that it tries to interpret anything that can be kinda sorta read as a question, as a question I'm asking *it*, and tries to answer it -_- and the result is so bad

1. AI agents are finding new vulnerabilities in software at a frightening pace… 2. What can we do about it? Well, the least we can do is try to use the same agents to do security review before someone else finds the bugs 3. Try to use the AI agent to do security review 4. … 5. Rip, no profit

"Using AI for building software means you release slop" is missing the point so much (or more likely, operating on outdated / unverified assumptions)… dude is thinking about so many more things than I do!

Ok can someone ELI5 what happened in the broad AI-adjacent circles this time or do I need to ask Attie to figure out the subskeets
