Industry's AI Ethics Boards Reviewed 23,000 Products Last Year; Approved All of Them

SAN FRANCISCO— The AI Industry Ethics Oversight Consortium, a trade body representing 94 corporate ethics boards established between 2019 and 2025, released its annual impact report Thursday, confirming that member boards collectively reviewed 23,412 products, features, and deployment decisions in the past 12 months.

They approved all of them.

Average deliberation time fell to 4.3 days in 2025, down from 6.1 days in 2023, which the report describes as an efficiency gain. Three boards completed reviews in under 90 minutes, a subcategory the report calls "expedited ethical consideration."

One vote against was recorded in the entire calendar year: a board member at an undisclosed lab objected to a hiring model that systematically downgraded candidates who listed "union organizing" under personal activities. The vote was 8 to 1. A second vote, held four days later following what the report describes as "a clarifying conversation with product leadership," returned a unanimous abstention — characterized in the report as "a consensus outcome."

Current board membership across member companies includes 212 ethicists, 178 lawyers, 94 communications professionals, and, as of Q1 2025, four language models serving in an "advisory capacity."

Six board members resigned last year. Their replacements have not been announced. Three vacant seats are currently filled by members serving in dual roles.

"Our members take the work seriously," said AIEOC executive director Pamela Vance. "They just also take shipping seriously."

The report's executive summary recommends that all products "proceed cautiously and with care for societal implications."

It was approved unanimously.
