Albanese Unveils 'My Feed, My Way' Algorithm Opt-Out Bill

The Australian government on 8 September 2026 released draft 'My Feed, My Way' legislation that would force major social media platforms to notify every user and let them switch between an algorithmic feed and a chronological feed of only the accounts they follow. Per the ABC's reporting, the requirement applies to Meta, TikTok, Google and other major platforms. Non-compliance can draw penalties up to $109.2 million, enforced by the independent eSafety Commissioner.

For users under 16, platforms would have to disable personalized algorithms and endless scrolling by default.

'The reality is that lots of people will want to choose the algorithm,' Communications Minister Anika Wells said. 'That's their choice.' Prime Minister Anthony Albanese framed the bill as 'putting choice back into the hands of Australians online,' and Wells compared the wider Digital Duty of Care regime to 'basic safety standards for cars, toys or food.' Wells also said users would be able to choose 'over and over' if they changed their mind.

The Coalition is not on board. Shadow Communications Minister Sarah Henderson called the measure 'an absolute threat to free speech.' Labor has released the draft for targeted consultation with digital platforms, industry associations, civil society groups and advocacy bodies, and aims to table the legislation in Parliament later this year.
