Google Migrates Gemini Gems to Paywalled 'Skills' on Nov 17

Google will migrate every user-created Gemini Gem into its newer 'skills' framework on November 17, 2026, according to an in-app notice surfaced by 9to5Google. 'Gems will become skills starting Nov 17, 2026,' the banner reads. 'Starting November 17, 2026, we'll automatically begin migrating your Gems to skills. You will be able to use your Gems until they migrate.'
The mechanics change with the label. Gems, introduced in 2024, lived in a side panel that users had to scroll through; skills are invoked by typing '/' in the prompt box, with multiple usable at once inside a single conversation. Creation happens inside the Gemini Spark tab.
The catch is who gets to make one. Gems have been free to build and share for anyone using Gemini. Skills creation is limited to Google AI Pro and AI Ultra subscribers, moving the DIY layer of the product behind a paywall while migrated Gems keep running. Google's rollout also looks premature: 9to5Google notes the 'Learn more' help article and 'Create skills' button do not work yet.
It is the second Gemini surface change we've tracked this week alongside the Flipkart buy-button test in India, both pointing at the same effort to fold side experiments back into the main chat window.
