Meta blocks ByteDance ads on Facebook and Instagram in 7 markets
TL;DR
- Meta bans ByteDance ads on Facebook, Instagram and other apps in the US, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam, effective immediately.
- The policy also blocks third-party advertisers whose campaigns point users to TikTok or other ByteDance services in those seven markets.
- Spokesperson Chris Sgro said Meta doesn't 'have to run ads from a competitor whose goal is to pull people off our apps.'
Meta has stopped accepting ads from ByteDance on Facebook, Instagram and its other apps in seven markets, with the restriction taking effect immediately, Bloomberg reported. The affected countries are the US, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand and Vietnam, and the policy also covers third-party advertisers running campaigns that point users to TikTok or other ByteDance services in those markets.
The company is framing the move as ordinary commercial judgment rather than a policy escalation. "We don't have to run ads from a competitor whose goal is to pull people off our apps," spokesperson Chris Sgro said, describing the decision as standard business practice.
ByteDance has shown up in 41 of our alerts over the last 90 days, including TikTok's AI shopping assistant and Buy Direct checkout rollout earlier this week, exactly the kind of commerce funnel that would normally be fed by paid acquisition on Meta.
Neither company has disclosed what ByteDance historically spent on Meta's ad system in the seven markets, and Meta has not said whether other countries will follow.
