Meta's Muse App Hits 10.2M US Downloads in First 40 Days

TL;DR

  • Muse hit 10.9 million downloads globally and 10.2 million in the U.S. in 40 days, joining only 11 other apps that reached that bar.
  • U.S. retention ran 30% at 7 days and 23% at 14 days, against rival averages of 19% and 16%.
  • Meta allocated 39% of its U.S. ad spend to Muse in October, lifting it to the 21st largest brand by impressions from 73rd in September.

Meta's new assistant app Muse has pulled 10.9 million downloads globally and 10.2 million in the U.S. in the 40 days since its September launch, TechCrunch reported using fresh Sensor Tower data.

"Only 11 other apps to date have reached this type of post-launch milestone," Sensor Tower senior insights analyst Kara Lee said, naming Fortnite, PUBG Mobile, Pokémon GO, and others. The most recent before Muse was Meta's own Threads, back in July 2023.

Engagement is running ahead of rivals too. In the U.S., the app had a 30% retention rate after 7 days and a 23% retention rate after 14 days, against rival averages of 19% and 16%. It peaked at 2.5 million daily active users on October 16 and held the #1 spot on the U.S. App Store every day except October 19.

The money behind the curve is heavy. Meta has allocated 39% of its total advertising spend to market Muse in October, up from 23% last month, lifting the app to the 21st largest U.S. brand by ad impressions this month from 73rd in September. For scale on the rival side, ChatGPT managed 3.7 million U.S. downloads in its first 40 days, Grok 500,000, and Claude 200,000.

The ad-fueled ramp lands against a messier backdrop: an AI Weekly alert yesterday covered a Muse agent handing a Toronto seller's address to a stranger, the kind of incident that can bite a mass-market consumer product fast.
