Musk Says SpaceX Staff Will 'Parent' Grok Trained on Their Work

TL;DR

  • Musk told a SpaceX all-hands the company's Grok AI will train on employee work, saying staff will 'effectively be the parents of the AI.'
  • Musk projected 10 gigawatts of AI compute could produce $300-500 billion in annual revenue, versus SpaceX's current 1.4 gigawatts.
  • Fortune notes SpaceX has not detailed which employee data will feed Grok or how it will be handled.

At a SpaceX all-hands, Elon Musk told employees they would 'effectively be the parents of the AI' as the company trains its Grok AI on internal SpaceX data and employee contributions. Grok would inherit their 'thoughts and ideas and beliefs,' and in Musk's phrase, 'So in a way, it will be trained on you.' Fortune's story, by news fellow Joshua Hong, is the first public look at how SpaceX plans to feed the model.

The financial framing was the loud part. Musk projected AI would become 99% of SpaceX's revenue in the coming years, with 10 gigawatts of AI compute capable of generating $300 billion to $500 billion in annual revenue. SpaceX currently runs 1.4 gigawatts and targets 10 by the end of 2027, so those numbers assume roughly a seven-fold compute buildout on a tight timeline. Stress-test that against the capex whenever a real disclosure lands.

The quieter part is the labor and privacy story. Fortune notes SpaceX has not detailed which categories of employee information will feed Grok, or how that data will be handled. That gap is the whole game. In April 2026, Meta's Model Capability Initiative began capturing employee keystrokes, mouse movements, clicks and screenshots for AI training, and about 1,600 Meta employees signed a petition opposing the program. Musk is now asking his own workforce for similar consent, days after SpaceX folded Cursor into its SpaceXAI unit, which broadens the surface of what 'SpaceX internal data' can even mean. The same unit is already shipping a Grok Bot beta on Mac, iOS, PC and Linux, so the pipeline from employee inputs to shipped product is short.

Because Fortune itself flags the disclosure gap, the $300-500B and 99%-of-revenue numbers should be read as Musk's projections at an internal all-hands, not booked pipeline. If SpaceX pairs the ambition with a clean, published consent framework, the payoff is a proprietary training corpus no rival can easily replicate. If it does not, the Meta petition template already exists, and this time it may arrive faster.
