OpenAI Extends ChatGPT Health to All US Adults on Web, iOS

The bigger tell in TechCrunch's report that ChatGPT Health is now open to every US user 18 and up isn't the launch itself. It's what OpenAI wired the thing into. Epic and Oracle Health, the two systems most American hospitals actually use for patient records, sit on the clinical side. Apple Health, MyFitnessPal, One Medical and Function sit on the consumer side. That is a very different product from a chatbot that can talk about symptoms. It's a chatbot that already knows your labs, your allergies, and what you logged for breakfast, and that context now travels across any conversation you have with it, on the free tier as well as Go, Plus and Pro, on web and iOS.

The scale numbers OpenAI shared help explain the urgency behind moving off a dedicated hub. Weekly health-related queries reportedly climbed from 230 million during testing to 300 million now, and the company says 70% of those happened outside the dedicated hub it stood up in January 2026. People were treating any chat as the health chat, and the January hub was in the wrong place. This week's move concedes that and pushes the personalized layer into the default surface.

For anyone running a payer, a health system, or a consumer health app, the strategic read is that ChatGPT is quietly becoming a front door for a large slice of everyday US health questions, sitting on top of the same EHR stack you already pay Epic or Oracle for. OpenAI's own claim that its smallest model, referred to as GPT 5.6-Luna, outperforms GPT 5.5 on an internal HealthBench evaluation is worth taking as reported rather than settled, since HealthBench is OpenAI's own benchmark.

The honest caveat is that this ships the day after a Florida pastor filed suit alleging ChatGPT gave 'a near-fatal suggestion not to consult a doctor,' per the same TechCrunch report, and OpenAI still labels the product as 'not intended for use in the diagnosis or treatment of any health condition.' What the reporting doesn't give you is the HIPAA posture around the Epic and Oracle hookups, the timeline for Android or non-US rollout, or whether the pending lawsuit changes anything about the launch cadence.

The interesting thing to watch is which of the integrated partners, Apple, Epic, Oracle, One Medical, treats this as distribution and which starts treating it as a competitive threat.
