I attended a meeting today organized by my union on AI in higher education and I was encouraged both by all the work being done to protect members against AI in our day-to-day work *and* a desire to collectively fight AI surveillance on SUNY campuses in the form of Flock cameras.

These are the use cases OpenAI is touting in its announcement today that it’s partnering with 55 new schools systems. How else might educators accomplish these goals? Talk with colleagues about revising lessons. Ask students to identify gaps in representation. We don’t need OpenAI for this work.

As an incoming SUNY faculty member, I was happy to hear our union’s new contract addresses AI: "The agreement includes wording that all SUNY courses will be under the 'direction and responsibility' of humans, and that humans will have the 'ultimate accountability' for work done by AI systems.”
