Today in AI in education is cop shit: "BusPatrol’s cameras would take a photo of each car a bus drives past, record the car’s license plate and GPS location, and then law enforcement can query that data."

"People everywhere are picking up the mantle of collective resistance....Educators and students are pressuring their institutions. Victims and their families are suing. Tech employees themselves are campaigning. Group chats for more organizing abound. People are marching." - @…
What emerges from this latest look at Alpha School is detail after detail revealing just how much the company’s leadership and investors absolutely despise children, their families, and education.
"xAI is selling $15 billion per year in compute at its Memphis campuses to Anthropic, another company planning a blockbuster IPO in the coming months. 'People don’t matter to SpaceX, or Anthropic, or whoever is building these data centers,’ [Representative] Pearson says.”
Solidarity with these students who want no part in this experiment: "A small but vocal minority of Estonian students say they refuse to use AI on moral grounds, citing issues such as water consumption by data centers or political complaints about U.S. tech companies, teachers …

I appreciate that the letter, signed by 29 of 51 city council members, called for ongoing "'education on the multiple risks in employing the technology’”, an approach that reinforces teaching about and against AI technologies before (if ever) teaching with them.
This analysis from @bcmerchant.bsky.social on "Anthropic’s Mythos stunt” and "Its sheer cynicism, rank opportunism, and, yes, its ultimate effectiveness” is the kind of critical AI literacy that I’d like to see taught in schools.
I think education researchers considering applying for these funds must be clear-eyed about Anthropic and the company's decision to partner with Elon Musk's xAI for its compute power at Colossus 1, the same Colossus 1 that's deepening environmental racism by poisoning the air …
- The $200M partnership splits contributions between Anthropic's API credits and technical staff versus the Gates Foundation's direct grant funding.
- Multilingual datasets produced under the deal will be released as public goods, available to researchers and developers beyond the partnership.
- Target geographies are low- and middle-income countries, with specific literacy program focus on sub-Saharan Africa and India.
I’d like to remind any possible Claude Corps (🙄) fellows that you’re propping up xAI, the Nazi Elon Musk, and the propagation of environmental racism in Memphis, Tennessee.

Important life update! Starting this fall, I'm going to be joining the State University of New York as a research assistant professor at Binghamton University. I will be leading a new research stream on AI and Society as part of Binghamton University’s First-Year Research Immersion Program.
TBH would love to see booing AI boosters spread to other contexts beyond graduation. Attending a professional development session led by some dude spewing AI hype? BOOOOOO. Enjoying a serene late spring/early summer family BBQ and Cousin Chad starts sharing his Claude life hacks? BOOOO, Chad, BOOOOO
Oh hey excited to attend my first 4S to present, “Parents, Caregivers, and a Growing Resistance to TechnoPower in Schools" with @alliethrall.bsky.social and “Refusing AI Hype in an Undergraduate Classroom: Reflections on AI, Equity, and Public Education" with Sepehr Vakil. See you in Toronto 🍁
