Love going to curriculum night but holy shit there’s so much AI slop in this kindergarten classroom
Collecting examples of a genre where a piece opens with a dad (often but not always a tech bro) using a chatbot to extrude a story to or with his kid. Sal Khan opens his book on AI in ed with a story like that and there was a Guardian article recently (please reshare) with a similar story. Others?
I attended a meeting today organized by my union on AI in higher education and I was encouraged both by all the work being done to protect members against AI in our day-to-day work *and* a desire to collectively fight AI surveillance on SUNY campuses in the form of Flock cameras.
TBH would love to see booing AI boosters spread to other contexts beyond graduation. Attending a professional development session led by some dude spewing AI hype? BOOOOOO. Enjoying a serene late spring/early summer family BBQ and Cousin Chad starts sharing his Claude life hacks? BOOOO, Chad, BOOOOO
These are the use cases OpenAI is touting in its announcement today that it’s partnering with 55 new schools systems. How else might educators accomplish these goals? Talk with colleagues about revising lessons. Ask students to identify gaps in representation. We don’t need OpenAI for this work.

Every day is a good day to teach the histories and political economies of ed-tech, but today’s bid from Anthropic to capture K-12 teachers and news of a failed crypto/sex robot company selling a robot to a high school serving a large population of Indigenous youth really emphasizes the urgency.
As an incoming SUNY faculty member, I was happy to hear our union’s new contract addresses AI: "The agreement includes wording that all SUNY courses will be under the 'direction and responsibility' of humans, and that humans will have the 'ultimate accountability' for work done by AI systems.”
Receiving a message from a student you taught long ago who’s excited to share an update - hell yeah I want to hear about your work on AI and misinformation - remains one of the best feelings.
