Huge thanks and congrats to the @aimoratoriumnyc.bsky.social @comixaction.com and everyone who answered the call to demand @mayor.nyc.gov establish a moratorium on "A.i." in the public schools. We got a PARTIAL win today, thanks to you! But more needs to be done... 🧵 www.nytim…

📣 Announcing the release of the 🕊️ Annotated Encyclical 🕊️ from the ethics & society folks at @hf.co. Includes citations to relevant academic work. Very much a WIP. Please add work we haven't added yet! huggingface.co/spaces/socie...

The Annotated Encyclical - a Hugging Face Space by society-ethics huggingface.co
AI Weekly's analysis
  • Hugging Face's society-ethics team added 105 scholarly AI ethics citations to Pope Leo XIV's May 2026 encyclical Magnifica Humanitas.
  • The encyclical declares technology 'is never neutral' and warns that 'never has humanity had such power over itself.'
  • The annotation project is open for community contributions linking academic AI ethics research to the papal document.

Claude is getting watermarks. I presume GPT will need to implement this too to comply with EU regulations support.claude.com/en/articles/...

How Claude marks AI-generated content | Claude Help Center support.claude.com
AI Weekly's analysis
  • Anthropic has committed to the EU AI Act's Article 50(2) Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content, per its Claude support docs.
  • Claude models released on or after August 2, 2026 support machine-readable marking at launch; earlier models are still being retrofitted.
  • Text gets an imperceptible watermark; .svg, .png, and .jpg outputs get signed C2PA provenance metadata, but Anthropic says detection is not conclusive.

1/ Christopher Manning on Kumar & Isola's “Pretraining Recurrent Networks without Recurrence”: use a transformer teacher to learn predictive state reps, then supervise the memory update rule. X: https://x.com/chrmanning/status/2091596739492909404 Paper: https://arxiv.org/abs/2…

Pretraining Recurrent Networks without Recurrence arxiv.org
AI Weekly's analysis
  • Supervised Memory Training reduces RNN pretraining to supervised learning on one-step memory transitions, enabling time-parallel training without unrolling.
  • A Transformer encoder trained on a predictive state objective supplies the memory labels the RNN then learns to reproduce.
  • The authors report SMT beats standard backpropagation through time on language modeling and pixel sequence modeling.

@iclr-conf.bsky.social There is a discrepancy/ ambiguity regarding the paper submission deadline. iclr.cc/Conferences/... and iclr.cc/Conferences/... say 25th of September while iclr.cc/Conferences/... says 16th of September. A clarification would be highly appreciated! 🙏

BAAI just released the Orca paper 🔥 ( weights coming soon ) huggingface.co/papers/2606.... A Multimodal Latent World Model: it learns the world itself first, and text/images/actions are just different ways to read it out 💡

Paper page - Orca: The World is in Your Mind huggingface.co
AI Weekly's analysis
  • Orca pretrains on 125K hours of video and 160M event annotations using a single Next-State-Prediction objective on a frozen Qwen3.5 backbone.
  • Orca-4B averages 51.8 across MVBench, TemporalBench, 3DSRBench, and SWITCH, ahead of Qwen3.5-4B's 46.7 at the same size.
  • On a real-robot out-of-distribution test Orca reports 36.6% versus π₀.5's 27.6%, despite using no action labels in pre-training.

Recent commentary

The lack of consent for datasets is a serious problem in ML. By addressing this, we could make a step towards healthier ML practices. I started building something around decentralised data sharing with consent and provenance verification. If you are interested, let's chat at #ECCV2026!

One great use case of agentic LLMs, for which I haven’t seen much discourse about (although obviously I’m sure people do this), is cleaning large-scale pre-training data with calling tools, including open-source LLMs etc. It does an AMAZING 🤩 job, and saves tones of time!

Suddenly everyone's algorithms started "self-improving"... Like, there are no human researchers working in the companies, or thousands of raters for RLHF. LIARS
