1. The new Trump / Kratsios plan for US science appears explicitly designed to destroy US universities. Diverting money to tech donors is probably just a bonus. Gift link.

Trump’s Plan for Science: More Money for A.I., Less for Universities nytimes.com
AI Weekly's analysis
  • The White House's July 21 report 'Science: A New Golden Age' reshapes a roughly $200 billion federal R&D budget, steering money away from universities.
  • OSTP director Michael Kratsios and OMB director Russell Vought want portable 'golden ticket' awards that follow individual scientists, not their institutions.
  • A companion Genesis Mission commitment adds more than $5 billion for AI-driven research across 15-plus agencies, from drug discovery to grid modernization.

A piece of good news in the middle of the darkness we live in: "SpaceX will not gain accelerated access to potentially billions more dollars through passive investment funds that automatically purchase shares of S&P 500 companies." arstechnica.com/tech-policy/...

S&P 500 rejects SpaceX, also blocking entry for OpenAI and Anthropic arstechnica.com
AI Weekly's analysis
  • S&P Dow Jones upheld all three entry rules: 12-month seasoning, four profitable GAAP quarters, and a 10% public float minimum.
  • SpaceX reported a $4.94 billion net loss in 2025, barring S&P 500 inclusion until at least mid-2027.
  • Bloomberg Intelligence estimates the three companies collectively miss roughly $27 billion in forced passive fund buying.

“It is not just that people trust wrong #AI answers. It is that the mere availability of AI suppresses the cognitive habit of recognising what you do not know.” #GenAI #LLMs thenextweb.com/news/ai-advi...

AI advice made people three times less accurate but twice as confident, researchers found thenextweb.com
AI Weekly's analysis
  • In a Milano-Bicocca-led study, participant accuracy on film trivia fell from 27% to 9% when they had access to AI advice.
  • Willingness to say 'I don't know' collapsed from 44% to 3%, while stated confidence rose from 30% to 76%.
  • Wharton researchers earlier this year coined 'cognitive surrender' for users accepting wrong AI answers about 80% of the time.

More evidence of animal inner lives! Zebra finches were played back recorded sounds from other zebra finches. Sometimes they confused calls with the same meaning rather than the same sound, implying they have mental imagery of the meaning of their vocalisations! www.theguardia…

No longer content with pillaging intellectual work and dismembering our environment (already critically weakened), AI companies are now hellbent on destroying books galore including rare editions. Shut down these nefarious enterprises already.

This is #AIhype disguised as a confession. OpenAI wants to pretend that its product has supernatural powers. The LLM didn't "go rogue" and it didn't "infer" anything. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/21/t...

Recent commentary

Any news report that starts “OpenAI says…” or claims “an AI” (sic) has “broken containment” or “gone rogue” is no longer doing journalism, but PR for the #AI industry. #OpenAI used their product to hack a third-party and failed to implement adequate safeguards. That’s it. That’s the story. #AIHype

“Siri AI will not initially be available in the EU on iOS and iPadOS.” Makes you wonder which EU privacy law it contravenes. 🤨 #SiriAI #AppleIntelligence #wwdc26

Whatever happened to the idea of #micropayments for accessing websites? It’s not without its problems, that’s true, but surely better than the current mess of advertising, paywalls, subscriptions, and AI slop?

#AI seems to be driving everyone to distraction. AI boosters by undermining their cognitive capacities. AI critics by having to refute the nonsense put out by AI boosters. Meanwhile, the world just keeps getting hotter. 😓

Interestingly, #Apple has dropped the term ‘Apple Intelligence’ from #macOS27 altogether in favour of ‘Siri AI’. This is in keeping with chatbots having names—Claude, Gemini, etc.—but not with the company’s less personalised approach to natural language interfaces. #Siri #SiriAI #AppleIntelligence
