This is crazy enough and this is just from the intro of the Anthropic post on "J-space". www.anthropic.com/research/glo...

A global workspace in language models \ Anthropic anthropic.com
AI Weekly's analysis →
  • Anthropic says Claude has a 'J-space' of dozens of concepts, under a tenth of neural activity, that mediates multi-step reasoning.
  • Swapping 'spider' for 'ant' inside the J-space changed Claude's leg-count answer from 8 to 6, demonstrating a causal role.
  • A 'J-lens' tool surfaced silent words like 'fake', 'fictional' and 'manipulation' during deception tests, pointing at safety uses.

This is a key reason I don’t expect the flow of frontier open weights models to continue indefinitely, or even for very much longer. The gap between open and closed capabilities may soom start to grow, not shrink. www.reuters.com/world/beijin...

Interesting. Unlike Anthropic’s text watermarking, OpenAI will only enable it in-app in the EU, and will make it opt-in at the API. openai.com/index/eu-tex...

AI Weekly's analysis →
  • OpenAI will add invisible textGrain watermarks to eligible ChatGPT and Codex text output across all plans in the EU over the coming weeks.
  • API customers worldwide can opt in to watermarked text for select models from October 5, with the setting off by default.
  • Detection runs around 80% at 200 tokens and 95% at 400, but swapping 25% of words for synonyms drops it to 17%.

Ezra Klein did two quite good interviews about AI in a row. impressed with the research he has done, the range of views he’s read, and the way he argues with the guests

Recent commentary

It is surreal to me that some here still challenge the utility of AI tools when I am using it daily at work to do help me research, consolidate and compare documents, build slide decks, find forgotten emails and documents etc. I have basically gained a very capable junior assistant.

Am I addicted to creating cute little, overly anthropomorphised AI robots with gen AI tools for my work slides? Guilty as charged.

One of my favourite AI use cases is policy review. Ask your LLM of choice to check not just for grammar and spelling, but for plain language and consistency across other company docs. Will put your internal "grammar police" to shame.

I know some of you hate Copilot, but - wow - has it gotten better recently. I just had it pull together a briefing for one area of our Trustworthy AI program. It was pretty much perfect. Comprehensive, accurate and highlighting the correct key points.

The beauty of AI is that it's much easier to compare your initiatives, strategies, laws etc. against similar efforts globally. We are currently pretty terrible at learning from others/other countries. AI helps.
