If you're going to cite that NBER report from OpenAI about "how people use AI," you've got to at least caveat it. We have no way to directly verify most of the report, and we do have at least one good reason, via indirect evidence and quoted below, to not trust it. www.nber.or…

How People Use ChatGPT nber.org
AI Weekly's analysis
  • ChatGPT reached about 10% of the world's adult population by July 2025, with 700 million weekly active users sending 18 billion messages per week.
  • Non-work messages have grown from 53% to more than 70% of all ChatGPT usage between late 2022 and July 2025, per the NBER paper.
  • Writing accounts for about 40% of work messages, and roughly two-thirds of writing tasks involve editing user-provided text rather than generating from scratch.

One more thing @tuhinchakr.bsky.social 's post reminded me of... people tend to rationalize and see things not there. We saw it already in GPT-2 stories - we *expect* things to *mean* something, so we tend to see things that are not there... (link to this old paper: aclantholo…

LLMs are not conscious. They do not have a perfect sense of embodiment. They are autoregressive models that generate text by sampling, more or less, from a very large pile of things other people wrote. Read my first essay on Substack 👇 tuhinchakrabarty.substack.com/p/ai-slop-g…

The biggest difference between the scandal over Shy Girl being partly AI-generated and the new allegations over Daggermouth seems to be that the Shy Girl author acknowledged AI involvement (tho blamed someone else) while the Daggermouth author denies it. So now what? Nice @wil…

🚨 New paper on AI & Copyright Using @pangram.com full-text AI detection, we study self-published genre fiction on Amazon, 2023–26. Amazon is flooded w/ books with substantial AI text. They earn real 💰 & crowd out non-AI books. w/ @dhillonp.bsky.social @xinyuel.bsky.social & Jane Ginsburg (1/n) 🧵

Ran some 🧪 to 🔬 why the Granta short story was certainly 🤖 generated. A lot of bad writing happens because AI hasn’t learned aesthetics. It has simply memorized the whole internet and called it a day. So sure, maybe you don't trust AI detectors. But you can trust your own eyes. #AISlop

For @timesofindianews.bsky.social I wrote about why we desperately need to rely on accurate AI detectors to prevent this slopocalypse. Yes @pangram.com is the best AI detector we’ve got and blanket statements like detectors don’t work are not backed by empirical evidence but isolated anecdotes
