Brevo Review: Email Automation and Alternatives
Assess Brevo for lifecycle email with a worked onboarding test, suppression checks and a comparison with ActiveCampaign.
In this guide
Brevo deserves a place on a shortlist when the problem is keeping customer communication consistent as people move through a lifecycle. The purchase should follow a clear map of those stages. Buying an automation platform before defining who should receive which message usually turns an unclear process into a faster unclear process.
Start with the event, not the email
Brevo documents an automation builder with triggers, actions and rules. Evaluate that structure against one useful sequence: a new customer receives setup guidance, a customer who completes setup exits the reminders, and a customer who requests help reaches a person. The AI-assisted part can be drafting clearer instructions; the eligibility decision should remain explicit and inspectable.
Write down the authoritative source of each event. A contact opening an email is not equivalent to completing setup. If the product cannot report setup completion, use a verified milestone or a short manual review queue instead of pretending an engagement signal proves success.
A trial with five fictional contacts
Create records for a new customer, a completed customer, an unsubscribed contact, a duplicate event and someone already waiting for support. State the expected result before activating anything. Use internal test addresses and review every message. The unsubscribed record should not enter a promotional sequence; a duplicate event should not restart it.
Sequence decision record customer_id | qualifying_event | event_time completed_at | support_open | permitted_message_type last_step_sent | exit_reason
This is a proposed data design, not a list of fields Brevo creates for you. Test how your existing application supplies these facts and how an operator corrects an incorrect value. A good email editor cannot compensate for a missing exit condition.
What to compare with ActiveCampaign
Compare the exact branching, contact model, integration and reporting needed for your sequence. Ask a colleague to find out why one contact did not receive a message. That investigation is a practical comparison of usability. Our ActiveCampaign versus Brevo guide uses one shared scenario so that a longer feature list does not decide the purchase.
When to keep your existing sender
If you only send a regular newsletter and your current service handles consent, delivery and segmentation adequately, a migration may add work without improving the reader experience. Cost the contact database, message volume, required channels and maintenance together. Check the current plan for each required capability rather than assuming the entry price covers the workflow.
Use the onboarding example to define the process first. This assessment is based on documentation and a proposed evaluation method; it does not report deliverability tests or measured conversion gains.
