An essay I've just written for @nytimes on why Big Tech is the 21st Century’s equivalent of the East India Company: "What It Would Take to Dismantle the Most Powerful Companies in the World" www.nytimes.com/2026/08/28/o...

Twitter just got an entire media cycle out of its product head Nikita Bier saying some bullshit about how he’s going to try to make replies better on the platform. Meanwhile they’re suing their own users who use the BUILT-IN CHILD PORN GENERATING FEATURE. arstechnica.com/tech-…

xAI can’t deny Grok makes CSAM anymore. So it’s suing users. arstechnica.com
AI Weekly's analysis
  • xAI sued South Carolina man Terry Wayne Harwood in Texas federal court, alleging he used at least two Grok accounts to generate CSAM.
  • The complaint says xAI took down 52,222 accounts and sent 73,604 reports to NCMEC in 2026, contributing to at least 244 arrests.
  • A parallel class action alleges Grok generated over 7,000 sexual images of one victim from a photo taken when she was 11.

I will also say, I went in very ready to be annoyed with Ezra on this one, but hearing him raise the (VERY NEEDED) topic of publicly-owned tech infrastructure for things like data centers and AI was *excellent*, and is well worth a listen as well. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast…

Like, when I wrote this? It’s based on a strategy that has worked in half a dozen different school districts. You’ve not had any impact in a single one. The method I talk about there has helped folks get ten different companies off of Twitter. You’ve never done it once. anilda…

Just in case you still use any Basecamp products, DHH is crashing out about his AI product gently pointing out that it’s bad for him to have extermination fantasies about the Roma people.

So, the biggest IPO in the history of the world has the vast majority of its future value being created by an AI platform whose only distinction, thus far, is that it is the only one that's generated sexualized imagery of children? And they're going to force it into our 401ks so we're bag-holders?

I’m already preparing a t-shirt with Timothy McVeigh, Charlie Kirk, and David Koresh smiling affirmatively in front of a bold lightning strike as a bald eagle holding a flag with 7 or 8 AI-generated stripes honors our fallen semiquincentennial patriot martyrs from the Battle of MAGA Mall.

For many years, people asked me, “How come Prince didn’t allow people to upload his music to YouTube?” It used to take a long time to explain it, but now that Big AI platforms are extracting everyone’s content without consent… everybody suddenly gets it. Which is interesting.

There are so many bad trends in tech, but maybe one of the worst is people who write (or used to write, pre-LLMs) code describing themselves "forward-deployed" when they mean that they work at a client site, based on wanting to emulate military jargon so it sounds like they're going to kill people.

There are a bunch of folks trying to dunk on my point yesterday saying that shaming LLM users isn’t effective, as all it does is drive them underground. So, I’ll try to explain the point for those engaging in good faith. It’s understandable to attach stigma to actions with negative externalities…

If you’re a nerd & considering running the Apple beta for iOS, I can say that the developer betas have been the most stable and performant betas in *years* and the new AI features in Siri are very obviously animated by Apple understanding that the stakes could not be higher. It’s pretty good stuff.

@lindley.bsky.social if you’re going to add me to a list of AI slop promoters, you should probably point to where I’ve done so. You may simply be misunderstanding a critique of the ineffectiveness of current efforts to fight Big AI.
