Listen to @tressiemcphd.bsky.social when she writes that AI is "the backbone of a superstructure that merges regressive politics with unchecked economic power in the guise of technological innovation” - and then teach about and against the technologies with the help of the boo…

"xAI is selling $15 billion per year in compute at its Memphis campuses to Anthropic, another company planning a blockbuster IPO in the coming months. 'People don’t matter to SpaceX, or Anthropic, or whoever is building these data centers,’ [Representative] Pearson says.”
What a day for AI resistance resources! 1) The AI Resist List from @karenhao.bsky.social and colleagues at DAIR at airesistlist.org 2) The Luddite Lab from @alexhanna.bsky.social and colleagues at DAIR at labor.dair-institute.org
- Karen Hao launched the AI Resist List on the one-year anniversary of her book Empire of AI as a publicly accessible, community-contributed database.
- The database organizes entries by 'Pillars of Support' sustaining AI empires, a framework adapted from Choose Democracy's authoritarianism resistance model.
- Entries span labor actions, legal challenges, and grassroots campaigns across gig work, healthcare, education, and law enforcement sectors.
"'To be using AI without a thought about the problems that it causes for people around the world, and the water and electricity it’s consuming,' [16-year-old] Owens says, 'feels like [his peers are] failing an open-book test with the answers being screamed at them.’”
Meta still undefeated in its mission to be the most misanthropic company in human history. ht: @aicaution.ca
- Meta is piloting StoryKit, an AI iPhone app that generates personalized children's stories with illustrations, narration, and original music.
- Parents create a character by photographing a toy or person, pick a setting, and choose a lesson like kindness, courage, or empathy.
- The pilot is running in select countries with App Store availability in Mexico but not the U.S., and Meta restricts the app to users over 18.
Solidarity with these students who want no part in this experiment: "A small but vocal minority of Estonian students say they refuse to use AI on moral grounds, citing issues such as water consumption by data centers or political complaints about U.S. tech companies, teachers …
B. F. Skinner tried to test his teaching machines on Black children in Harlem to prove the product's profitability. Now this: "The school district serves roughly 1,300 students, including 32 percent who identify as American Indian or Alaska Native and 79 percent who are econom…

Important life update! Starting this fall, I'm going to be joining the State University of New York as a research assistant professor at Binghamton University. I will be leading a new research stream on AI and Society as part of Binghamton University’s First-Year Research Immersion Program.
TBH would love to see booing AI boosters spread to other contexts beyond graduation. Attending a professional development session led by some dude spewing AI hype? BOOOOOO. Enjoying a serene late spring/early summer family BBQ and Cousin Chad starts sharing his Claude life hacks? BOOOO, Chad, BOOOOO
Anybody have syllabus language about banning pervert glasses and other AI wearables that they want to share?
Every day is a good day to teach the histories and political economies of ed-tech, but today’s bid from Anthropic to capture K-12 teachers and news of a failed crypto/sex robot company selling a robot to a high school serving a large population of Indigenous youth really emphasizes the urgency.
As an incoming SUNY faculty member, I was happy to hear our union’s new contract addresses AI: "The agreement includes wording that all SUNY courses will be under the 'direction and responsibility' of humans, and that humans will have the 'ultimate accountability' for work done by AI systems.”
This Independence Day, I’m excited to announce the launch of my revolutionary AI-powered learning platform - Uncle Scam - that uses the latest in total data surveillance technologies plus bonus analytics to both personalize and democratize education like nothing you’ve ever seen! 🇺🇸🎆🇺🇸🎆🇺🇸

Happy Father's Day to all the dads out there…unless you’re offloading your caregiving and storytelling to a chatbot or Amazon Echo or some other relationship-eroding technology, in which case, WTAF, my dude.
Heard about a new parenting book just now via an email from our local children's museum. Book discusses raising kids in the age of AI and it’s blurbed by Eric Schmidt, Angela Duckworth, and Jonathan Haidt, which, I don’t know, doesn’t seem like a good sign - but I’m sure they'll help sell copies!
The kind of feedback that warms your heart and encourages you to keep going: "Your PD gave me confidence to have authentic discussions with colleagues at my school about not using Gen-AI tech in the classroom. Thank you!"
