Three reasons why AI is not conscious and perhaps never will be nature.com
AI Weekly's analysis →
  • Anil Seth, Ned Block and Giulio Tononi argue in Nature that consciousness in silicon-based AI is 'extraordinarily unlikely'.
  • The cerebellum holds nearly four-fifths of the brain's neurons yet does not affect conscious experience, the authors note.
  • The trio rejects a precautionary approach to AI welfare, framing current LLMs as mirrors of our digitized past.

Three reasons why AI is not conscious and perhaps never will be nature.com
AI Weekly's analysis →
  • Three leading consciousness researchers argue in a Nature comment that today's silicon-based AI systems are extraordinarily unlikely to be conscious.
  • They separate intelligence from feeling, noting the cerebellum holds nearly four-fifths of the brain's neurons yet contributes nothing directly to consciousness.
  • They warn that treating appearances of mind in LLMs as real risks diverting welfare attention from beings whose capacity to suffer is already certain.

Three reasons why AI is not conscious and perhaps never will be nature.com
AI Weekly's analysis →
  • Anil Seth, Ned Block and Giulio Tononi argue in a Nature comment published 19 October that current AI is not conscious and probably cannot be.
  • Their case stacks three moves: intelligence is not consciousness, computational functionalism is wrong, and leading theories of experience exclude today's architectures.
  • They judge false positives more likely than false negatives, so attributing consciousness to AI risks pulling moral attention from beings whose capacity to suffer is not in doubt.

  • Three leading consciousness researchers argue in Nature that today's AI systems are not conscious and probably never will be.
  • They separate intelligence from consciousness, noting the cerebellum holds nearly four-fifths of brain neurons yet produces no awareness.
  • They reject the idea that algorithms on silicon suffice for experience, calling large language models 'mirrors' of our digitized past.

Three reasons why AI is not conscious and perhaps never will be nature.com
AI Weekly's analysis →
  • Three senior consciousness researchers argue in a Nature essay that today's AI systems are not conscious and perhaps never will be.
  • They define consciousness as what disappears in dreamless sleep or under general anaesthesia, and treat it as distinct from intelligence.
  • The trio rejects computational functionalism and leans on integrated information theory to argue silicon architectures miss the bar.

Three reasons why AI is not conscious and perhaps never will be nature.com
AI Weekly's analysis →
  • Three leading consciousness researchers, Anil Seth, Ned Block and Giulio Tononi, co-signed a Nature essay arguing today's AI is not conscious.
  • Their first reason: the cerebellum holds nearly four-fifths of the brain's neurons yet contributes nothing to subjective experience, dissociating intelligence from consciousness.
  • They reject computational functionalism and argue deep-learning systems also fail on wiring, the interconnection pattern that integrated information theory requires.

Recent commentary

Any news report that starts “OpenAI says…” or claims “an AI” (sic) has “broken containment” or “gone rogue” is no longer doing journalism, but PR for the #AI industry. #OpenAI used their product to hack a third-party and failed to implement adequate safeguards. That’s it. That’s the story. #AIHype

What if the real alignment problem isn’t to get AI systems to be aligned with human goals and values, but to get *AI companies* to be so, one being a function of the other? #AIEthics #LLMs

A student in my philosophy of mind and AI class today described it as “rage bait every week”—and we haven’t even got to the AI part yet! (I’ve decided to take it as a positive. 😅)

Had the displeasure of configuring a #Windows laptop for #LittleHuman to use at school. I was shocked by the extent to which #Copilot now permeates the #Microsoft ecosystem. Even searches for answers to simple support questions run through Copilot. Such a wasteful use of technology. #Micro$lop

As a rule of thumb, the people who are most enthusiastic about #GenAI are those who are least committed to truth, accuracy and expertise in their own lives. In short, they have similar characteristics to an LLM, and assume everyone else does too. #Enshittification

#AI seems to be driving everyone to distraction. AI boosters by undermining their cognitive capacities. AI critics by having to refute the nonsense put out by AI boosters. Meanwhile, the world just keeps getting hotter. 😓
