I do not fear the rise of artificial intelligence. But I do fear the rise of a small set of billionaires and companies who seek to build such things to increase their power and their wealth, all without transparency or accountability.

Why do I host all my git repos locally? Because I don’t want an AI scraping my work.

It’s artificial intelligence. In the history of computing, this puerile attempt to rename it because of the simpleminded whims of an incompetent and corrupt narcissist will be seen as a failure of leadership, an abandonment of intellectual integrity, and an embarrassment for any who join with him.

Contemporary artificial intelligence is to cognition as artificial sweeteners are to good nutrition: full of misleading hype, distracting, and when misunderstood and misused, dangerous to one's well-being.

In the market of agentic mania ,apathy and hubris appear to be the primary competition for most anything involving solid engineering. Apathy: we don't need no stinkin' rigor, because we can iterate so quickly. Hubris: give me a swam of agents and enough tokens to stand on and I can move the world.

I find the acceptance and defense of mediocrity to be deeply depressing. This is true not just in the context of large language models, but particularly in the case of certain scholars and politicians.

In the face of generative AI coding agents, the role of human-led architecture becomes even more important in the crafting of software-intensive systems.
