All social science core classes at the University of Chicago will transition to an “analog” approach for the upcoming academic year, restricting in-classroom technology use and banning AI-assisted writing and grading for students and professors
Apparently scientists have discovered that when you don’t practice a skill it does not develop and you are less motivated to engage in tasks requiring this skill. Thanks science.

Are viruses alive? And prions? You don’t know I don’t know and nothing hangs on these questions. It is in fact not a scientific question. The same is true of AI consciousness. Everything that matters can be reformulated without the C word.

It strikes me that the AI agents are more like viruses hacking electronic systems than like smart organisms. Just like viruses hack cells, AI agents hack things similar in some way to themselves.
The level of arguments about AI csness is abysmal. No if LLMs are conscious using them is not slavery: see cows and horses. No we are not committing murder no more than when we kill a mosquito etc.

Why do I make so many typos? So they you know it’s not AI generated.
Generative AI has clear downsides for literature, the arts, and other human activities. But maybe just maybe it will read our times of influencers. Why give $$$$$$$$$$ to “content creators” when an AI can do it. Always a silver lining.
