I’m reading the Pope’s 83-page manifesto on AI. Notes/quotes 🧵 “Technology should not be considered, in itself, as a force antagonistic to humanity. On the contrary, it has formed part of our history since the beginning as ‘a profoundly human reality, linked to the autonomy & …

AI Weekly's analysis
  • Pope Leo XIV's 42,300-word Magnifica Humanitas, signed May 15 and published May 25, addresses AI as the central challenge to human dignity.
  • The encyclical states AI systems are 'cultivated' not 'built' and explicitly denies they possess experience, a body, or the capacity to feel pain.
  • Anthropic co-founder Chris Olah spoke at the Vatican's May 25 presentation alongside theologians and three cardinals.

Interesting study. There is, as everyone expected, a flood of AI books. And it is crowding out human authors: "No-AI books, on their own, earn less per book than they did in 2023 in 7 of 8 genres. The one genre where human authors are doing better (+35%) is Fantasy/horror" arx…

I saw “AI fail” on the grocery list, but it turns out we’re just out of aluminum foil and I have bad handwriting.

I’m really looking forward to when AI can compose and play a soundtrack for your life while you live it. That would be amazing. I mean, I’d probably turn it off after five minutes, but it would still be amazing.

Wow, the new ChatGPT desktop app sucks so much more than I realized at first. Web UI is ok. CLI is ok. Desktop app? May as well be BonziBuddy.

Stop replacing HUMANS with AI!! For example, if you can't code and you're tempted to ask AI, you could instead ask a HUMAN software engineer for help. And then that HUMAN software engineer will ask AI to write the code. See how much better that is? Yay for HUMANS!
