While golf courses exist in the desert, building a bunch of new golf courses in the desert would be controversial. One could imagine data center companies buying Phoenix golf-courses and replacing them with xeriscaped data center campuses, but that is not what's happening.
Why would you make a blanket statement that "core content is retained"? arxiv.org/abs/2603.18161
- Heavy LLM users produced nearly 70% more essays that stayed neutral on the topic question, and reported the writing felt less creative and not their own.
- Even when asked only to fix grammar in 2021 human-written essays, LLMs significantly altered the semantic meaning of the text.
- About 21% of peer reviews at a recent top AI conference were AI-generated, and those reviews scored papers a full point higher on average.
It's notable that the report has been out for 8 months and this was only detected because an "AI" vendor (GPTZero) had an adversarial interest. So much for the discernment capabilities of business/finance/executives. www.ft.com/content/b382...
Never forget that "everyone is cheating now" is literal marketing for the vendors. Demand to purchase these products is unperturbed by learning about harms, and overwhelmingly driven by perceived peer use. The solutions are necessarily systemic. www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/...
- In experiments on roughly 2,000 parents of 13-to-18-year-olds, willingness to pay for a premium AI subscription rose $1.83 for every 10-point jump in perceived peer take-up.
- Moving the scenario from 20% to 80% peer usage lifted parental spending by more than 60%, or about $11 for a three-month subscription.
- Telling parents GPT-4 users scored 'just under 20% lower' on later math tests raised ban support from 44% to 57% but barely moved willingness to pay.
This has many examples, with rationale, of software communities (in many cases, research software) engaged in refusal and various middle grounds. See also Codeberg's policy: blog.codeberg.org/protecting-o...
So maybe there wasn't enough political capital to course-correct the 67% error-rate "assistant", but surely people on the inside could exercise some caution about new projects. Lol, no. Lip service to validation and governance, but always full steam ahead. newsnetwork.mayoclin…
"AI literacy" is like "cigarette literacy" explaining how to light up with swagger. What we need is critical AI literacy (see olivia.science/ai/ from @olivia.science), which is a completely different curriculum. One that is liberating.
