A lot of news coverage on AI doom based off one tweet on a shitposting platform by a prodigal techbro. Do I fear superintelligence wiping us out? No, I fear incompetence and probably climate disaster, both of which could be somewhat mitigated by making tech companies more responsible & accountable.

This whole thing of LLM decisions without consent yet again makes me wonder when we'll see the first "Have YOU been misjudged by an AI?" advert along the lines of mis-sold car finance no-win, no-fee lawyers.

Well, hey, I'm entirely in favour of an AI slow-down too, I'm just not convinced that tech companies are calling for it out of the goodness of their own hearts.

If you're emailing me to tell me what an LLM has said about my work and my research area then no, I don't want to chat, I want you to go away and think thoughts of your own with your own beautiful brain.

Spent the morning diving into the Pope's encyclical on AI and was heartened it basically says what us lot have all been saying for years (tho his adds a "because god" bit) but because of that thoughtful stance on things like power I remain baffled by the inclusion of Anthropic in the launch event.

In my hotel room with BBC News on, and there's an AI segment and it's two women I know and like (Stephanie Hare, @ruchowdh.bsky.social ) and whose opinions I respect. SUCH a good thing to see women giving the expert comment (+ also no surprise that it's often women taking the solid critical stance).

Did two very contrasting radio interviews on AI destroying all humans: Nicky Campbell on 5Live, where the discussion was a decent "let's think the issues through" perspective and Radio Ulster's Talkback where they were deliberately leaning into the panic and I hope you could hear my eyerolls.

The 4.5hr flight delay aside, what an absolute treat to get to do an AI panel in Zurich with @eryk.bsky.social and @bvlsingler.bsky.social, both of whom are consistently excellent in their AI takes. Also I saw a goat robot.
